"Halt the Slaughter" - The Huge Protest in Rome for Palestinians

Crowds of thousands gather in Rome, demonstrating in solidarity with Palestinians.

Italy is echoing with the cries of hundreds of thousands who've taken to the streets in Rome, voicing their solidarity and calling for an end to Israel's ongoing attacks in the Gaza Strip. What started as a march from Piazza Vittorio, ended up a sea of Palestinian flags, peace signs, and "Free Palestine" symbols, making its way towards San Giovanni.

The crowds were fueled with anger and determination, evidenced by the large white banner at the march's head, reading "Halt the Slaughter, End the Complicity!" Organizers claimed the approximate number of demonstrators to be around 300,000, a figure later corroborated by police.

The event witnessed an early surge in participation, with opposition leader Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party stating the response was immense against the ongoing war. The Five Star Movement and the Left-Green Alliance also supported the show of discontent. The message conveyed was clear - the violence against Palestinians and the far-right government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must cease.

"The Silent Meloni Government": A Different Italy Demanded

The protesters expressed their displeasure with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government. They voiced their expectations for an Italy that stands against silence but instead champions peace, an immediate ceasefire, hostage releases, humanitarian aid, and recognition of the State of Palestine.

Meloni, on her part, had previously characterized the situation in the Gaza Strip as "increasingly tragic and unjustified," mentioning her challenging conversations with Netanyahu. In the same breath, she also stated that Israel did not initiate the hostilities.

The Gaza Conflict: A Powder Keg in the Middle East

This unrest in Rome follows the Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. As per Israeli records, over 1,200 people have perished, with 251 individuals held captive in Palestinian territories. Israel has responded with large-scale military operations in the Palestinian region since. Staggering figures from the Hamas-controlled health ministry report over 54,600 casualties thus far. The humanitarian predicament in the coastal strip has been dismal for months, with the United Nations warning of impending famine for all residents1[3][4].
