A chaos erupted at the Volksparkstadion during Hamburger SV's (HSV) promotion celebration, leaving over two dozen people seriously injured after the pitch invasion. One individual was critically injured and taken to the hospital, as reported by the Hamburg Fire Department.
Additionally, around 19 football fans were rushed to nearby hospitals with severe injuries, and another 5 with minor injuries. Some of them leapt from the stands, according to a fire department spokesperson. The injuries also resulted from scuffles among the fans. In total, 44 patients needed medical assistance.
In response to the commotion, approximately 65 personnel from rescue services and fire departments descended on the scene. More than a dozen ambulances were dispatched to the stadium.
Storming the Field
HSV clinched their rise to the Bundesliga following a triumphant 6:1 win against SSV Ulm in the evening. With pockets of fans storming the pitch minutes before the game concluded, toppling advertising hoardings. By the final whistle, it was impossible to contain their enthusiasm. Law enforcement was required to block fans from accessing the locker room area.
Apparently, some fans dismantled the promotion goal, taking out the net and disassembling the frame into its constituent parts. Fragments of the pitch were also taken, which is typical during such celebrations.
Emergency services were kept busy over the weekend, attending to several large events. Alongside the HSV promotion, Hamburg held its 836th Port Anniversary, and Schlager star Roland Kaiser performed at the Barclays Arena near the stadium.
