In the summer of 1981, the world was captivated by a fairytale event as Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer exchanged vows at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The wedding, watched by 750 million TV viewers in 74 countries, marked the beginning of a complicated and tumultuous relationship that would forever change the British monarchy.

The courtship between Charles and Diana had gained public attention in the early 1980s, culminating in their engagement announcement earlier that year. The anticipation was palpable, as Charles, the heir to the British throne, was set to marry.

On July 29, 1981, the wedding day arrived. The ceremony was a grand spectacle, with Charles entering the cathedral at 10:50 am, accompanied by Princes Andrew and Edward. Diana, in a glass carriage with her father, Earl Spencer, followed shortly afterward, reaching the cathedral around 11:20 am. The wedding began moments later, but Diana made a few mistakes during the ceremony, such as spilling perfume and reversing Charles’ middle names in her vows.

At noon, the couple signed the wedding register, and exited the cathedral amid cheers at about 12:27 pm. At 1:10 pm, they appeared on Buckingham Palace’s balcony, sharing the iconic kiss that was broadcast worldwide. A wedding breakfast followed, attended by around 120 guests. By 3 pm, Diana had changed into her going-away outfit, and Charles and Diana left Buckingham Palace by 4 pm, waved off by Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret.

The newlyweds embarked on a Mediterranean honeymoon aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, finishing in Balmoral. However, despite the fairytale appearance of their wedding, Diana later described her wedding day as the "worst day" of her life, hinting at underlying personal difficulties.

Their marriage was marked by significant challenges, including infidelity and public scrutiny, famously highlighted in later years by the revelation of affairs and Diana’s candid interviews. Diana’s fashion choices, such as the so-called "revenge dress," became symbolic in the story of their tumultuous relationship.

Tragically, Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Her death was a shock to the world, and the royal family was left to deal with the aftermath. Charles and Diana divorced in 1996, and Charles finally married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005, a union that had been a long time in the making, with the couple's first meeting happening 34 years prior to their marriage.

Despite the royal blunder and the bad omen it may have signified, the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer remains a significant event in royal history, marking the start of a complicated and tumultuous marriage that would forever change the British monarchy.
