Crowds Acclaim Trump in Britain

Efforts made by the British to charm Trump during his state visit and reel him back into the Western coalition have shown some success on the surface, yet concerns linger over his full re-integration.

Crowds Acclaim Trump in Britain

In a grand display of pomp and circumstance, President Donald Trump's state visit to the UK was marked by events at Windsor Castle and Prime Minister Chequers. During a press conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump expressed his appreciation for the unbreakable relationship between the UK and the US.

However, the visit was not without its share of controversies. The former British ambassador to the USA, Peter Mandelson, was dismissed by Prime Minister Starmer due to questionable connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Mandelson played a significant role in the trade deal between UK and US, and was also involved in planning the state visit.

The Epstein scandal reared its head once more as activists projected old footage of Trump with Epstein onto a tower of Windsor Castle. Meanwhile, Trump dismissed wind power as an 'expensive joke' and advised increasing oil production in the North Sea.

Trump's interactions with the monarchy raised questions about potential changes in his policies. King Charles III urged Trump to support Ukraine in his speech at the state banquet. Trump made further Russia sanctions contingent on all NATO countries imposing high tariffs on Chinese imports and stopping Russian oil purchases.

Trump also addressed the conflict in Gaza, emphasising the release of hostages without directly addressing the question of influencing Netanyahu to end the conflict. He praised Starmer for expressing his disgust with the terrorist organization Hamas.

However, the visit also saw a cultural clash, with the U.S. Republicans complaining about an alleged restriction of freedom of speech in Britain. This ironically came as pressure from Trump's MAGA movement may have played a role in the cancellation of U.S. comedian Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show by the U.S. broadcaster ABC. Trump dismissed any connection to Kimmel's cancellation, claiming it was due to poor ratings and that Kimmel has no talent.

One area of disagreement between Trump and Starmer was Britain's impending recognition of a Palestinian state. Trump described this as one of the few areas of disagreement, but the invitation to Trump was aimed at re-anchoring him to the side of the Western allies.

In the midst of these controversies, Trump accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of 'killing many people.' Whether this accusation will lead to changes in Trump's policies towards Russia remains uncertain.
