A wild promotion party has left at least 20 fans in critical condition following a chaotic pitch invasion at the Hamburger SV match on Saturday evening. One fan is in critical condition and was rushed to the hospital, while another 19 were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries, as per the Hamburg Fire Department.

Adding to the count, 5 more were treated for minor injuries. According to the fire department spokesperson, some fans jumped down from the stands while injuries also occurred due to scuffles on the pitch. In total, 44 patients received medical attention at the scene.

An impressive 65 personnel from the rescue service and fire department were on duty to handle the situation, with around a dozen ambulances responding to the emergency.

Euphoria Turns Tense

HSV secured their long-awaited return to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence with a massive 6:1 win against SSV Ulm. The stadium was buzzing with 57,000 ecstatic fans, and the atmosphere was charged with celebration - fireworks, car parades, and beer showers were all part of the post-match festivities.

However, the mood took a dark turn as jubilant fans stormed the pitch a few minutes before the end of the game, causing chaos and leading to the injuries. The police had to intervene to prevent fans from entering the locker room area.

According to Bild newspaper, some fans destroyed the promotion goal, removing the net and dismantling the frame. A few pieces of the pitch were also taken as souvenirs, which, while customary at such events, added to the disorder.

Post-match Pandemonium

This wasn't the first event-filled weekend for emergency services. Apart from the HSV promotion, people were also celebrating the 836th Hamburg Port Anniversary, as well as a performance by Schlager star Roland Kaiser at the Barclays Arena near the stadium.

It's a stark reminder that while these celebrations symbolize community spirit and team success, they also pose risks to public safety, especially when large-scale celebrations involve unauthorized entry onto the field.

Stay tuned for more updates as we monitor the situation. Our thoughts are with those affected and their families.
