Crowd encouragement sought by Tarique for BNP to execute reform plans
Bangladesh's Roadmap to February 2026 General Election
In a significant development for Bangladesh's political landscape, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has announced a roadmap for the upcoming national election, scheduled for February 2026. This decision has been supported by Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The announcement follows the removal of the previous government during the July Revolution in August 2024. The interim government has established constitutional and election reform commissions to oversee the process and ensure reforms before the election.
According to the roadmap, the election will take place in February 2026, as announced by interim leader Muhammad Yunus and reaffirmed by the Election Commission. The BNP, for the first time since 1991, plans to contest the elections independently, without its previous alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, with continued public support from Tarique Rahman.
Tarique Rahman addressed a rally organised by BNP on August 6, emphasizing the importance of implementing and practicing democratic political rights to establish democracy and the rule of law. He stated that without democracy and the rule of law, no one can stay safe in Bangladesh.
Rahman also urged people to remember the unsafe conditions and loss of democratic rights during the fascist regime. He highlighted the current moment as a great opportunity for democracy-loving citizens to establish their rights.
The BNP leader welcomed the initiatives of the interim government to implement reforms and called for unity among pro-democratic political parties in the national parliament to protect national interests. He also stated that BNP has presented its vision for governance, state management, and politics to the public.
The rally was followed by a procession through adjacent streets, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also speaking at the event.
The roadmap aims to restore democratic order following political upheaval, with the BNP playing a significant role under Tarique Rahman's leadership in the upcoming electoral process. The interim government has unveiled the July Charter to implement the people's will, and the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal is set to formally unveil detailed election plans and schedules.
This development marks a crucial step towards restoring democratic order and peace in Bangladesh, with the BNP and the interim government working towards a common goal of a fair and impartial election.
