In a thrilling display of basketball prowess, the Hellgate Boys and Knights teams emerged victorious in their respective crosstown matches against the Sentinel teams on February 2024.
The Boys' team extended their winning streak to an impressive 14 games, as they defeated Sentinel Boys with a commanding score of 65-38. Zane Gillhouse led the charge for Hellgate, scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Easton Sant contributed 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Chance McNulty added two transition buckets from half-court heaves, courtesy of Sant, in the third frame.
The first quarter ended in a tight 13-all tie, but Hellgate Boys pulled ahead in the second quarter, closing it on an 8-0 run to lead 28-13 at halftime. Kaitlyn Hammett scored 10 points for the Sentinel team, with Grady Walker leading scorers for Sentinel Boys with 11 points and 4 steals.
The Knights' girls team also secured a narrow victory over Sentinel, winning 41-38. Chloe Larson was the leading scorer for the Hellgate Knights with 12 points, while Emily McElmurry topped the scoreboard for the Sentinel team with 17 points. Alix Mund added five points for the Hellgate Knights in the third quarter.
The victory extended the Hellgate Knights' win streak to four straight games, and their record now stands at 10-6, 8-4. Sentinel's record is currently 7-9, 4-8. The Hellgate Boys' record now stands at 14-1, 11-0, while Sentinel Boys dropped to 8-7, 4-7 with the loss.
With these victories, the Hellgate Boys secured the number 1 seed in the Western AA rankings for the regular season. The crosstown record for the 2024 season now stands at 2-0 in favour of Hellgate, as the Knights evened up the record with their victory.
