"XXL-Powerbank" for emergency power supply in disaster situations - Cross-Border Project Boosts Emergency Power for Police and Rescue Teams

A new cross-border project is set to improve emergency power supplies for police, fire, and rescue services in western Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the Netherlands. The initiative, led by Osnabrück Police Headquarters, aims to develop a prototype system ensuring electricity for critical operations during crises and disasters. The three-year project, named Energy Storage Governance, has secured around €1.8 million in EU funding. It involves 14 partners, including research institutions, authorities, and security agencies from Germany and the Netherlands. The goal is to create a system that keeps electric emergency vehicles running during large-scale deployments or blackouts while also maintaining IT and communication networks in critical situations. The prototype system will focus on securing electricity for emergency vehicles and critical facilities during disasters. With €1.8 million in EU funding and a cross-border partnership, the project aims to strengthen crisis response in the region. A shared governance framework will help coordinate efforts between Germany and the Netherlands.
