Croatia Participates in Council of Europe's Advocacy for Journalistic Freedoms Initiative
Unleashed Report: Croatia Takes a Stand for Journalistic Safety 🗣️
Eager to safeguard journalists and uphold media freedom, while also adding fuel to the flames of democratic society and fostering public awareness about the crucial role journalists play in maintaining a vibrant and diverse society, the Council of Europe kick-started the "Journalists Matter" campaign, and Croatia showed its support.
According to the data amassed by the Council of Europe's Platform for the Promotion of Journalism and Journalistic Safety, since 2015, a staggering one thousand six hundred warnings about potentially lethal threats to journalists and media freedom have been issued across Europe. The objective of the campaign is to vastly enhance the working conditions for journalists sprawling across the continent, focusing on the adoption and implementation of national action plans for the protection of journalists as well as refining legal and institutional standards.

Jasna Vaniček-Fila, Croatia's national coordinator and head of the Directorate for Media and Development of Cultural and Creative Industries, graced the conference with her presence and delivered a captivating presentation. The conference marked the first meeting of the Council of Europe campaign's national coordinators, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Media.
During her talk, Vaniček-Fila illuminated several significant milestones Croatia has achieved in the pursuit of the safety and well-being of journalists. These accomplishments include the recent signing of cooperation agreements and the drafting of two protocols for the protection of journalists by the Ministry of the Interior and journalist associations.

These protocols cover essential aspects of journalistic safety, such as establishing a code of conduct for police behavior at public gatherings and outlining the proper police response when learning about criminal offenses directed at journalists and other media workers in the course of their duties.
Vaniček-Fila further emphasized Croatia's relentless efforts in combating Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) – a ploy often used to silence critics – by establishing an expert working group within the Ministry of Culture and Media last year. The group has engaged in a series of workshops for judges and journalists across Croatia, raising awareness and the general public understanding of the repercussions of SLAPP suits.
Last name:
This dedication to SLAPP eradication is so integral to Croatia's future plans that it has been incorporated into the umbrella medium-term strategic document of the National Plan for the Development of Culture and Media between 2023 and 2027, both currently under public consultation.
