Critics Voice Concerns over Proposed 'Pet and Livestock Protection Act'

Watch out, wildlife lovers! The shady Pet and Livestock Protection Act of 2025 is giving conservationists a run for their money. Politically named to deceive, this legislation is aimed at snatching gray wolves residing in the Lower 48 from the Endangered Species Act's safeguards prematurely. The bill has been tossed into the ring by none other than Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Colorado representative with a knack for stirring controversy.

"This bill is as slippery as a greased eel, and if it's passed, it'll wreak havoc on our nation's crucial conservation laws," warns Ellen Richmond, senior attorney at Defenders of Wildlife. "These misunderstood predators have a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems; pulling the plug on their recovery won't just hurt the species, but also the breathtaking landscapes we can't imagine losing."

While the bill's title might have you believe it was created to safeguard pets and livestock, think again. It's more accurate to say that Mother Nature, not wolves, is the actual adversary of livestock each year. Non-lethal deterrent solutions have a proven track record when correctly applied in preventing wolf run-ins with livestock and pets.

The dedicated team at Defenders of Wildlife works alongside livestock producers to develop and implement an array of these effective non-lethal tools for protecting both livestock and pets in wolf-populated territories.

For more than seven decades, Defenders of Wildlife has stood steadfast in their mission to safeguard all native plants and wildlife in their natural habitats. With a vast network of nearly 2.1 million members and activists, the organization is a leading champion for innovative conservation efforts to ensure our wildlife thrives for centuries to come. 1. The Dishonest Pet and Livestock Protection Act of 2025, despite its deceiving title, is not about safeguarding pets and livestock but rather aims to remove gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act's protection, disrupting environmental-science-based conservation policies and legislation.
  2. In contrast, the focus of policy-and-legislation in areas such as disease prevention and management, like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and the Foreign Animal Disease Prevention, Surveillance, and Control Act, are more relevant to genuine pet and livestock protection measures, not related to gray wolf recovery.
