In a recent development, Brandenburg's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Andreas Buettner, is facing criticism from several left-wing party members. The controversy stems from Buettner's stance on Israel and his social media comments regarding the Middle East conflict.

Nine members from Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rhineland-Palatinate have accused Buettner of violating the party line. A motion for his expulsion from the Left Party has been proposed, stating that his comments on the issue violate party resolutions and ignore international law.

One of the contentious issues is a post by Buettner on the X portal, where he wrote that recognizing a state of Palestine would be the worst step. The nine members also object to Buettner's criticism of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Israel, in turn, accuses UNRWA of being infiltrated by the Islamic Hamas.

Buettner, however, defends his stance, stating that the focus should be on attacks against Jews in Brandenburg due to Israeli government decisions. He also criticized the party leadership for not meeting with the Central Council of Jews, a request he made in October.

The Left Party, known for its staunch opposition to anti-Semitism, stands irrevocably on the side of oppressed peoples, according to the motion against Buettner. The party's federal party conference in May called for an end to displacement and famine in Gaza and the implementation of international law.

Buettner has been subjected to derogatory names such as "Zionist pig," "child murderer," and "genocide denier." Despite the criticism, Buettner maintains that individual members are not bound by party resolutions.

This controversy marks a significant division within the Left Party, with members expressing solidarity with Palestinians and others defending Buettner's pro-Israel stance. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how this internal conflict will be resolved.

  1. The controversy surrounding Brandenburg's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Andreas Buettner, has extended to other states, with nine members from North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, and Rhineland-Palatinate criticizing him for violating party policy and legislation.
  2. The general news and politics sectors have been abuzz with discussions about Buettner's stance on Israel and the Middle East conflict, particularly his opposition to recognizing a state of Palestine and his criticism of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
  3. As this internal conflict unfolds, North Rhine-Westphalia, and other states within Germany, find themselves caught up in the larger debate on war-and-conflicts, crime-and-justice, and international relations, as members within the Left Party express their differing views on the Israel-Palestine issue.
