Randi Weingarten Slams Trump in Fiery Protest Speech, Quits DNC
The American Federation of Teachers' leader, Randi Weingarten, called out President Donald Trump in a spirited "No Kings Day" protest speech in Philadelphia. The speech, delivered on June 13th, drew intense backlash from conservatives and critics on social media.
In a rousing speech, Weingarten lashed out at the current administration, with one popular conservative account, Libs of TikTok, likening her performance to a lunatic tirade. The video captured Weingarten's animated, energetic delivery during the Saturday protest.
The backlash against Weingarten comes on the heels of her resignation from the Democratic National Committee (DNC), citing disagreements with the party leadership. In a letter penned to DNC Chair Ken Martin on June 5th, Weingarten expressed her concerns over the party's direction, stating, "I appear to be out of step with the leadership you are forging, and I do not want to be the one who keeps questioning why we are not enlarging our tent and actively trying to engage more of our communities."
Fellow union official, Lee Saunders of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, also announced his departure from the DNC around the same time, with sources indicating that the pair's exit follows former Vice Chair David Hogg's exit from the DNC earlier in June after choosing not to run for re-election.
Weingarten's "No Kings Day" speech emphasized unity, hope, and justice, asserting, "You are the community to this president's chaos, and together we build a future of opportunity and justice for all."
Some social media users labeled Weingarten's speech a "meltdown," while others criticized her approach to education during the pandemic. One conservative account, Amuse, commented, "The Democrat Party just lost the support of the nation's second largest Teachers Union led by Randi Weingarten. The DNC board member and superdelegate resigned from the party the day after she led the nationwide 'No King's protest.'"
Conservative pundits have also highlighted Weingarten's push for Trump critics to take to the streets on June 14th as part of the national "No Kings Day" protests, with some criticizing the violent protests that erupted in Los Angeles and Portland on the same day. Amidst the controversy, Weingarten remains steadfast in her convictions, reiterating her commitment to education and the values of inclusivity and equality that she stands for.
