San Cristobal Drama Unfolds
Critics condemn widespread detentions following attack on law enforcement offices.
In a shocking turn of events, San Cristóbal de las Casas witnessed a violent ambush that claimed the lives of five State Police agents. The Chiapas Attorney General made this grim announcement Monday afternoon.
Detailed investigations revealed that the patrol vehicle the agents were traveling in suffered a staggering 200 gunshot impacts.
Among the alleged culprits, one man was identified as "N" and was apprehended early Tuesday, approximately a kilometer from the Las Champas dump, on the border with Guatemala. Authorities found him concealed amidst bushes, clutching an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, three cartridges, military-style garments, and a backpack.
Another troubling development is the detention of ten residents from the Sabinalito village. They are accused of impeding the roads during the operation.
Shortly after the ambush, a massive force of over a thousand State Police officers was dispatched to Frontera Comalapa to track down the perpetrators. In response, the residents of Sabinalito voiced their concerns about heavy-handed police actions, claiming that officers barged into homes, breaking down doors, and detaining men and women without warrants.
A live transmission by Esmeralda Hernández accused the police of firing indiscriminately at civilians and planting drugs on her detained husband. She also reported that at least four men were detained both on the street and in their homes, and that upon the police departure, they fired shots at several houses.
"We aren't against law enforcement. Our sole demand is for the innocent people who were detained to be released."
Following the unfortunate incident, the officers' remains were handed over to their families.
