Saxony's Minister-President, Michael Kretschmer, has called for reopening dialogue with Russia through the Nord Stream gas pipelines, a proposal that's drawn considerable criticism from the German Green Party leader, Felix Banaszak. In a statement following consultations in Berlin, Banaszak deemed Kretschmer's plan "exceptionally brazen," stating that he, as a senior CDU member, should prioritize Germany's and Europe's independence and resilience rather than catering to Russia's interests.
Kretschmer's proposition suggests that reactivating Nord Stream could help bridge the gap in negotiations with Russia, potentially leading to a decrease in energy prices for German businesses and citizens as up to 20% of gas supplies could be supplied from Russia. This input follows Kretschmer's interview with Zeit Online, where he voiced his support for this approach.
However, this stance contradicts the position of Chancellor and CDU party leader Friedrich Merz, who supports the EU Commission's plan to deter the reactivation of the pipelines as part of a new sanctions package against Russia in response to Russia's refusal to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine. Banaszak urged Merz to ensure that forthcoming sanctions against Russia are enforced, even if difficult measures such as the confiscation and transferral of Russian assets to Ukraine are required.
Notably, the Left party chairwoman, Sahra Wagenknecht, voiced her support for Kretschmer, asserting that resuming operations at Nord Stream is essential for Germany's economic interest.
