Criticizes Hendrik Wüst the Federal Government for earmarked finances and roadway infrastructure reductions
CDU Minister-President Hendrik Wüst of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) has voiced his concerns over the federal government's handling of the special fund for highway and federal road expansion and new construction. Wüst criticized the lack of funds for road construction, particularly in his state, and the shifting of planned investments to the special fund.
The core transport budget is set to decrease gradually until 2029, with significant shifts in the transport budget this year. The special fund, which is currently facing a deficit of 15 billion euros, is expected to take on many long-planned investments due to the budget cuts.
Wüst expressed his worries that these budget cuts could lead to the cancellation of dozens of highway and federal road projects in North Rhine-Westphalia. He believes that abandoning these projects, after years of planning, would be a waste of taxpayers' money and create a new investment bottleneck.
The Minister-President also pointed out that the cancellation of these projects could have unforeseeable consequences for the German economic location, potentially causing a hard blow to the industrial location in North Rhine-Westphalia. He called for a quick, fundamental correction of the plans regarding the special fund to prevent such outcomes.
Wüst expects more construction to occur through the special fund, but he also expressed concern that the people's expectations may not be met. He stated that the purpose of the special fund becomes absurd when planned investments are shifted to it, as it was intended to supplement, not replace, the core transport budget.
The potential abandonment of these projects could negatively impact the German industrial location, as they are crucial for maintaining the country's infrastructure and supporting its economy. Wüst urges the federal government to address these issues promptly to ensure the continued development and prosperity of Germany.
