Baerbock's UN Job: A Politically Shrewd Move Amidst Controversy

Criticizes Baerbock's nomination as a "temporary choice" by Heusgen

Hop on the bandwagon as Annalena Baerbock prepares to ascend to the top diplomatic role: President of the UN General Assembly. Previously, Helga Schmid was slated for the position, but the shift has stirred quite a stir.

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, fiercely criticized Baerbock's nomination. He alleges, "It's brazen to swap the epitome of Germany's most seasoned global diplomat with an outdated model." Heusgen argues that this move is merely a red herring, referring to the initial nomination of Schmid being replaced with Baerbock.

Originally, the German government aimed to put diplomat Helga Schmid forward as the German nominee for the presidency of the UN General Assembly in September 2024. Schmid is a distinguished diplomat, also serving as Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Munich Security Conference and formerly Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

However, it was later revealed that the German government now plans to nominate Baerbock as the German candidate for the presidency of the UN General Assembly 2025/26. The decision is currently in the cabinet approval process.

Germany Marches into the Spotlight

The position of President for the UN General Assembly, due to internal UN agreements, is assigned to Western European states group for the session period 2025/26. Germany has already been granted the right to occupy this position for some time.

The upcoming UN General Assembly elections in New York, attended by all 193 UN member states, will take place in early June. The term will run from September for a year. If Baerbock is elected, she is expected to vacate her Bundestag mandate upon taking office.

Schmid's Lasting Legacy

In his scathing critique of Baerbock's nomination, Heusgen spotlights Helga Schmid's remarkable achievements. Schmid held key roles, such as chief of staff to former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Secretary General of the European External Action Service. Moreover, Schmid played a crucial role in negotiating the Iran nuclear deal[3].

As Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Schmid also reportedly helped prevent the organization's collapse. Pondering Baerbock's political motto, Schmid inquires, "Is this the essence of feminist foreign policy?" Former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel echoes similar criticism, expressing admiration for Schmid and suggesting that Baerbock could learn a substantial amount from her.

  1. Given the heated response from Christoph Heusgen, the Commission might consider supplementing its proposal for the directive on the protection of workers from the risks arising from the use of electronic communications networks, as Baerbock's nomination to the UN role has supposedly overshadowed Helga Schmid's impressive diplomatic career.
  2. Despite the profound influence Helga Schmid exerted during her tenure, such as her vital efforts in preventing the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) from collapsing and her significant role in negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, her nomination was replaced by Annalena Baerbock, raising questions about the supposed purposes behind this political move.
  3. Even though Christoph Heusgen's criticism of Annalena Baerbock's nomination for the UN General Assembly presidency has highlighted her potential lack of seasoned diplomatic experience, she could still learn valuable lessons from a distinguished diplomat like Helga Schmid, who served as chief of staff to former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Secretary General of the European External Action Service.
