Pulling Pope Leo XIV's Punch: A New Pope, Old Politics
Criticisms on United States politics were shared by Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has stirred up quite a storm, blatantly dishing out criticism against US politics - mainly targeting Vice President JD Vance and the infamous former President, Donald Trump.
Just days before his coronation as the Holy See's chief, Prevost publicly posted his views on his digital platform, X. On February 3, he shared an article from the "National Catholic Reporter" that took aim at Vance for misquoting Catholic teaching to justify the Trump administration's foreign aid cuts.
In the article, Vance claimed that Christians should prioritize loving their families over helping the rest of the world, citing Thomas Aquinas. Prevost, in his post, refuted this notion, stating that loving others as Jesus taught us means we shouldn't rank that love.
And it didn't stop there. Prevost also criticized Vance for his stance on immigration in response to Pope Francis' criticisms of the Trump administration's mass deportations. Just before his ascension to the papacy, he shared a post on X that accused the US government of "mistakenly" deporting a migrant to El Salvador.
But how about Trump? Well, apparently, the bulletproof Trump wasn't deterred by Prevost's sharp words. In fact, Trump celebrated Prevost's election as the first American Pope, tweeting, "May God bless him!" on his Truth Social platform, expressing his confidence that millions of American Catholics would pray for Prevost's leadership.
Funny enough, neither Trump nor Vance mentioned Prevost's critical posts in their congratulations. Perhaps they were too busy basking in the glory of having one of their own elevated to the papacy.
A Pope with a Pointed Finger
So, who is the new Pope, really? A Trump supporter? Not exactly. With his blunt criticisms, Leo XIV has painted a clear picture: he is no fan of Trump's policies, especially when it comes to immigration. Though specifics are scarce, his stance mirrors broader concerns within the Catholic Church about social justice issues.
It's a complex relationship, to say the least. The Vatican, with its ancient traditions and values, squares off against the brash, unpredictable politics of US administrations. But one thing's for sure - Pope Leo XIV isn't afraid to speak his mind.
