Unapologetic Reminders: Wulff Slams AfD at Buchenwald Liberation Commemoration

Hey there! Check this out...

A crowd of hundreds, including survivors of the infamous concentration camps, gathered in Weimar, Thuringia, to honor the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora. The event featured music and text, secretly crafted by the imprisoned, adding a poignant touch to the commemoration.

Former Federal President, Christian Wulff, took the stage and didn't hold back, drawing a direct line from Nazism to today's political landscape. "With the brutalization and radicalization, and a global shift toward the right, I can now envision how such atrocities could repetitively rear their ugly heads," Wulff declared, pointing to the dark chapters of the Nazi reign and its chilling development. He emphasized the crucial need for active participation in defending democracy and upholding our humanity. Wulff was transparent in stating, "We bear an ongoing, eternal responsibility to ensure that evil never, I repeat, never, triumphs again."

Wulff calls out the AfD, labeling them as more than just a political party. "Those who trivialze the AfD ignore the fact that their ideology breeds an environment where people in Germany can feel uncomfortable and actually in concrete danger," Wulff warned. Those who believe the AfD could be swayed by integration are dead wrong, according to Wulff.

A controversy arose around a speech by German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm, initially slated for the memorial event but later postponed. "I see Omri Boehm as an advocate for universal human dignity, pursuing justice, understanding, and reconciliation," Wulff explained. He expressed understanding about the outrage surrounding Boehm's views on memory culture, Yad Vashem, and Israeli politics. Previously, Wulff expressed gratitude to Israel for extending an olive branch to Germans after the atrocities of the Nazi era.

A few days prior, it emerged that the foundation behind the Buchenwald memorial had pulled Boehm's original speech from the program and planned a separate meeting instead. The Israeli embassy vehemently opposed Boehm's speech, with the grandson of a Holocaust survivor raising concerns around memory culture and Israeli politics. Foundation director Jens-Christian Wagner opted to postpone the speech to spare the survivors from being further embroiled in the debate, emphasizing that the focus should remain on them, not the contentious discussion.

The Nazis forcibly transferred around 280,000 individuals to the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar and its satellite camps from the summer of 1937. Approximately 56,000 victims succumbed to death from murder, starvation, forced labor, disease, or experimental treatments. On April 11, 1945, Allied forces liberated the camp.

(FYI: Know that the AfD, short for the Alternative for Germany, has been scrutinized and, in some cases, considered firmly rooted in right-wing extremism. Their ideology and rhetoric bear striking resemblance to sentiments expressed by the Nazis, causing concern among many in the political and social spheres.)
