Criticisms Levied Against the Leader of an AfD Event by Arpaschi
In the picturesque town of Baden-Baden, a heated debate has arisen over an upcoming event scheduled for September 2026. The event, featuring former Economics Minister Robert Habeck, has sparked criticism from local politician Alexander Arpaschi, a member of the Bundestag and city councilor representing the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Despite the high demand for the event, with 90% of the approximately 200 tickets already sold out, Arpaschi has sharply opposed the invitation of Habeck, organized by Baden-Baden Events GmbH. He has labelled Habeck as 'the wrecking ball of the German economy' and an 'economic policy failure,' and has criticized the event as an irresponsible use of taxpayers' money.
However, event and tourism chief Nora Waggershauser has denied accusations that her organization, Baden-Baden Events (BBE), deliberately hides costs. She has confirmed that she will respond to inquiries from city council members about the activities of BBE. Waggershauser clarified that BBE is the cultural event organizer of the Kurhaus, with funds specifically from the state for events.
BBE manages around 170 event days per year, with the aim of extending radiance beyond the city limits. The annual budget for BBE is approximately 800,000 euros, and the goal is to offer a diverse range of events, including children's events. Additional revenue for BBE comes from admission fees, which must cover costs for rent, technology, and other expenses.
Arpaschi has claimed that the costs for the Habeck event are not a responsible use of taxpayers' money. However, Waggershauser has stated that the honorarium for the former minister is significantly lower than the 8,000 euros assumed and included in Arpaschi's overall cost calculation. Waggershauser is considering moving the event to a larger room like the Weinbrennersaal due to high demand.
The Baths and Spa Administration (BKV), a subsidiary of the state of Baden-Württemberg, benefits from these revenues, with the money flowing back to the state. BBE enjoys special conditions with BKV, like a large customer. If the Habeck event is moved to a larger hall, a surplus from this event is expected for BBE.
Arpaschi has also criticized Waggershauser, stating that she is 'unsuitable, incapable, and unfit' as the managing director of Baden-Baden Events. He has further claimed that it is an audacity to present Habeck in Baden-Baden due to his policies that threaten the World Heritage site. Arpaschi believes that the owners of 'the magnificent Baden-Baden old building substance' have to bear high costs to shoulder the effects of the heating law.
This controversy serves as a reminder of the ongoing political debates within Baden-Baden, with opposing views on the role of events and their impact on the community. As the event approaches, it remains to be seen how these disagreements will unfold.
