US-EU Trade Dispute: Merz Criticizes Brussels Over Complex Negotiations Regarding American Trade Dispute - Criticisms from Merz: EU negotiations in US customs dispute deemed overly complicated
Germany's political heavyweight, Friedrich Merz, has taken aim at the European Union (EU) for its intricate approach in negotiating trade conflicts with the United States. He singled out United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer's public display with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit in Canada last week, signing a deal on trade matters.
"We can't do that, France can't do that. We can only do that together in the European Union," Merz contended. But, in Merz's opinion, negotiating myriad "different tariff codes with the Americans now is the wrong time with the wrong topic."
Merz called for swift joint decisions for four to five major industries: automobile, chemistry, pharma, machinery, steel, and aluminum. According to him, these sectors are of critical importance for the EU economy.
“We need a quick agreement with the Americans on that," Merz said optimistically. "We are trying to present this together in Brussels now," he added, indicating his collaboration with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Merz insisted on a more straightforward approach to trade talks, emphasizing the need for what's essential and time-sensitive. "We don't want the best of the best, we want what's most important and necessary," Merz stated firmly.
Under President Trump, the U.S. ignited a global trade conflict with its aggressive trade policies. In April, Trump imposed substantial additional tariffs on various countries before reducing them to 10 percent for 90 days. A higher tariff rate of 25 percent is imposed on products such as cars and automotive parts. In May, Trump announced an additional threat of increasing the general tariff rate for the EU to 50 percent.
EU members like Germany are now taking part in expedited negotiations with the U.S., aiming to simplify agreements in vital industries. The goal is to reduce negotiation complexity and expedite agreements on sectors crucial to both economies.
