Criticism surfaces over the €1,000 child bonus given to officials' offspring
In a recent development, Andreas Stoch, the SPD parliamentary group leader, has expressed concerns over the child supplement for civil servants in the state of Baden-Württemberg. According to reports in local newspapers such as the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and "Stuttgarter Nachrichten", Stoch finds the 1,000 euros supplement for the third child hard to justify.
The supplement, which amounts to 989.17 euros per month, according to the Ministry of Finance, has been a subject of criticism not only among the general public but also from the civil service union. The state chairman of the union, Kai Rosenberger, speaks of a "financial advantage of civil servants' children that is difficult to explain from a socio-political point of view".
Stoch, who belongs to the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), supports reliable remuneration in the public sector and believes that good, adequate remuneration for public sector workers is right. However, he believes that the supplement may be wrong in the end and uses the example of people needing to justify the amount, stating that the third child is worth 1,000 euros.
Despite his criticisms, Stoch finds the previous increases in child benefit sensible and supports people who have children, as they are doing what is important and right for society. He also points out that he has not made a final decision on the child supplement for civil servants in Baden-Württemberg.
This criticism of the child supplement is not an isolated incident. In 2020, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the remuneration of child-rich judges and public prosecutors from North Rhine-Westphalia was too low and partly unconstitutional.
The debate over the child supplement for civil servants in Baden-Württemberg is a complex issue, with both supporters and critics voicing their opinions. As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen whether any changes will be made to the current policy.
