Criticism mounts on Senate Democrat for inflammatory remark equating small businesses to being 'taken in the neck'; accusations of aggressive language levelled against the politician.
Sen. Mazie Hirono, a Democratic senator from Hawaii, has been vocal in her criticism of the Trump administration's tariffs and their impact on small businesses. In a post on platform X, Sen. Hirono stated that small businesses are being negatively affected by the tariffs. This assertion comes amid a reported 6.7% year-over-year decrease in small business hiring amid a surge in tariffs, as per a report by Bank of America. Hirono's comments were made in the wake of the Senate showdown regarding the FBI pull-up test, during which she decried the test as gender bias. Recently, Kelly Loeffler, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, accused Hirono of using 'calculated, violent rhetoric.' This accusation was made in a post on a certain platform. In response to Loeffler's accusation, Hirono reiterated her concerns about the negative impact of tariffs on small businesses. Fox News Digital reached out to Hirono's office early on Friday morning to request a comment from the senator. It is important to note that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) plays a role in the current tariff discussions. The SBA represents and advocates for small businesses impacted by tariffs, as these tariffs affect the cost of imported goods, operational expenses, and competitive dynamics for small companies in the U.S. Sen. Hirono has served in the Senate since early 2013, having previously served in the House of Representatives. She made her 'taking it in the neck' remark in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week, which has reignited a debate over Section 230 protections for social media companies. In addition to her comments on tariffs and the FBI pull-up test, Sen. Hirono has been active in other areas. She spoke onstage at the All-In and Hill & Valley Forum 'Winning The AI Race' on July 23, 2025, and questioned witnesses during a special forum on the rising cost of education on May 14, 2025. Furthermore, she asserted that everything the Trump administration is doing is to transform the government into a source of unchecked power for Donald Trump.
