Criticism mounts from Jewish community over Israel's truce agreement

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a halt in German arms deliveries to Israel, a decision made in response to Israel's planned military operations in the Gaza Strip. The black-red federal government's move comes as a direct response to Israel's intention to capture Gaza City during its military operation against Hamas.

Merz cited deep concern about the intensified military action in Gaza, its impact on civilians, and the worsening humanitarian situation as reasons for the embargo. He emphasized that Germany continues to support Israel’s right to self-defense against Hamas terrorism but cannot contribute arms to a conflict increasingly threatening civilian lives.

The decision marks a shift from earlier German support that included approving €485 million worth of weapons deliveries since October 2023. Merz urged Israel to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza and to avoid annexation moves in the West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hopes that Merz might reconsider the suspension, showing diplomatic friction. Some view the embargo as potentially undermining Israel’s security amid ongoing conflict, given Germany’s significant role as an Israeli arms supplier (about 30% of Israel's security imports come from Germany).

The embargo could affect supplies critical to Israeli military hardware, such as submarine deliveries and engines for Merkava tanks, due to Germany’s control over the supply chain. There is debate about the balance between German historical support for Israel and current humanitarian concerns.

Criticisms of the decision also come from within Germany, with Reinhard Schramm, the chairman of the Jewish community in Thuringia, claiming that democratic countries, including Germany, have failed for years in the fight against Iranian and its allies' terror. Schramm believes that leaving the fight against terror largely to Israel is shameful for democratic countries.

Schramm wrote that the deadly threat to Israel in a multi-front war was the result of the failure of democratic countries in the fight against terror. He criticized Chancellor Merz for effectively renouncing the German state's raison d'être.

The German embargo is not without international support. The UN Secretary-General and various countries have criticized Israel’s Gaza strategy, framing the German embargo as part of wider global unease with military actions raising civilian casualties.

In summary, Chancellor Merz’s halt aims to restrict German arms from being used in intensified Israeli military operations in Gaza due to humanitarian concerns, while attempting to maintain overall support for Israel’s right to self-defense. This policy shift has met with criticism both within Israel and internationally, reflecting tensions between military support and ethical considerations in an ongoing conflict.

  1. In response to Israel's military operations in Gaza, Germany has reconsidered its policy-and-legislation regarding arms deliveries, implementing a halt to weapons supply, citing war-and-conflicts' impact on civilians and the worsening humanitarian situation as reasons.
  2. The general-news is abuzz with discussions about the potential ramifications of this policy-and-legislation shift, with some fearing it could undermine Israel's security given Germany's role as a significant supplier of arms, while others argue that it is a necessary step due to the intensified conflict and the need for humanitarian intervention.
