Criticism Mounts Against CDU Proposals for Theater and Firefighting Initiatives

Proposed demolition of Solingen's Theater and Concert Hall for a fire station raises skepticism: the plan does little to boost city center revitalization and replacing the landmark theater with a fire hose tower at the city entrance is problematic.

Criticism Mounts Against CDU Proposals for Theater and Firefighting Initiatives

In the heart of Solingen, a city known for its rich cultural heritage, a divisive proposal has been put forward by the CDU's mayoral candidate, Daniel Flemm. The plan involves the demolition of the Theater and Concert Hall (TuK) to make way for a new fire station.

However, the Greens have raised concerns about this proposal. They argue that the limited space for industrial development in Solingen could be affected by the CDU's plans. Moreover, the proposal seems to contradict the Greens' vision for the revitalization of the city center.

The TuK, a venue for the Bergische Symphoniker and host to over 600 events annually, is not, as stated by Daniel Flemm, dilapidated. In fact, the glass facade of the TuK was renewed in 1998 at a cost of 5 million euros to secure its future. Since 2019, the building has undergone continuous renovation and is renovation-friendly.

The Greens, who advocate for a revitalization of the city center, have not expressed outright opposition to the discussion on Solingen's development. Instead, they have proposed a usage concept for P&C and Kaufhof, and an overall plan that aligns with the challenges of climate change. They want all investments to directly lead to improvements in the quality of life of the city's residents.

The CDU's proposal involves the use of a potential industrial site. Abandoning the principle of 'industry follows industry' could increase pressure on the use of valuable outer areas. Corresponding plans for the renovation and modernization of the fire stations in Wald and Mitte are available, as acknowledged by Holger Poschen, financial spokesman for the CDU faction.

The Greens, led by Ruth Fischer-Bieniek, faction and cultural spokeswoman, have emphasized the need for cultural political proposals to be linked with realistic financial considerations. They have proposed a unique alternative to the CDU's plan, suggesting a fire hose tower instead of the iconic theater at the entrance to the city center.

As of now, various feasibility studies would be required to evaluate the CDU's proposal, and these studies would cost several hundred thousand euros. The CDU has not yet commented on these costs or the potential impact of these studies on their plans.

The current status of the proposal by Solingen's CDU mayoral candidate to demolish the Theater and Concert Hall for a fire station remains unclear, with no recent developments reported in local news sources. However, the controversy surrounding this proposal underscores the importance of balancing industrial development, cultural preservation, and the revitalization of city centers in Solingen and beyond.

  1. The Greens, advocating for revitalization and alignment with climate change challenges, have proposed a usage concept for P&L (policy-and-legislation) and Kaufhof, and an overall plan that balances industrial development, cultural preservation, and city center revitalization, unlike the CDU's controversial proposal for demolishing the TuK.
  2. The CDU's proposal for the demolition of the TuK, a venue for general news like the Bergische Symphoniker, to make way for a fire station, contradicts the Greens' vision for the city center and raises concerns about the limited space for industrial development, particularly the potential abandonment of the 'industry follows industry' principle.
