As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps, Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora, a stern warning from former President Wulff echoes: the AfD must not be downplayed. Wulff, denouncing the far-right party as extremist, calls for an unequivocal rejection and resistance against today's revisionist forces.
In his fierce speech, Christian Wulff, the former President of Germany, decried the AfD, escalating anti-semitism, nationalist ideology, and authoritarian thinking. "Disregarding these threats constitutes an atmosphere that places minorities at risk," he declared. In his eyes, the misconception that the AfD can be pacified through integration is flawed. "Anyone failing to clearly distance themselves is complicit with the oath of Buchenwald," he pointedly stated.
Wulff drew a chilling parallel from the heinous crimes of National Socialism to the present, emphasizing because of the escalating brutality, radicalization, and global shift towards the extreme right, events like Buchenwald could echo once more if not tackled head-on. He urged everyone to be vigilant, advocating for active support of democracy to shun humanity's dark past. "We bear an eternal responsibility to ensure evil never triumphs," he stressed.
Politics Memorial Event Honors Buchenwald Victims:Several hundred guests joined the memorial event near Weimar, Thuringia, to honor the victims of the concentration camps. The former subcamp of Buchenwald, Mittelbau-Dora, witnessed prisoners laboring under dehumanizing conditions since 1943, manufacturing Hitler's notorious V2 rockets.
Thuringia's Minister-President, Mario Voigt, condemned the concentration camps as a "systematic dehumanization." He urged citizens to remain vigilant, especially in light of increasing antisemitism and nationalist ideologies. He spoke on the atrocities at Buchenwald, "A place where civilization was shattered; where destruction, starvation, and deliberate cruelty reigned. We find ourselves numb today, as survivors endured this inhumanity," stated Voigt.
Politics Boehm Speech Controversy:Wulff delved into the controversy surrounding the originally planned speech by German-Israeli philosopher, Omri Boehm, who was postponed to a different date. Wulff expressed admiration for Boehm, a champion of universal human dignity with a goal to seek justice, understanding, and reconciliation. However, he acknowledged the ongoing tension caused by Boehm's critical views on the culture of remembrance, Israeli memorial sites, and Israeli politics.
Earlier reports suggested that the Buchenwald memorial foundation had removed Boehm's speech from the memorial event's program, allegedly at the Israeli embassy's request. The foundation argues that this move aimed to shield the survivors from being entangled in the debate about the speech.
Books Buchenwald and its 139 subcamps: An Unimaginable Legacy:During Wulff's tenure as President, many historical issues were addressed, emphasizing remembrance and unity. Between 1937 and the liberation of the Buchenwald camps in 1945, approximately 280,000 individuals had been deported, with over 56,000 losing their lives due to murder, hunger, disease, forced labor, and medical experiments.
Germany must remember the atrocities committed by the National Socialists to safeguard a future where evil never triumphs.

Additional Insights:
While Wulff's stance on the AfD's role in distorting the consequences of National Socialism in Germany is not explicitly discussed, his speech expresses a clear opposition to the far-right and revisionist ideologies promoted by the party. The Left (Germany), another political party, has been vocal in its condemnation of such actions[1]. However, Wulff's personal opinions on the matter, as well as evidence supporting his claims, are not conclusively stated or documented.
