Criticism from the CDU over the rebranding of the CISPA Innovation Campus as alleged 'economic policy provocation'
CDU Criticizes Saarland Government Over CISPA Innovation Campus Renaming
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saarland has expressed criticism towards the Saarland Ministry of Economy's plan to rename the CISPA Innovation Campus. The CDU, which has traditionally prioritized cybersecurity and AI, has accused the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Minister Jürgen Barke of economic arson and causing significant economic damage.
The CISPA Innovation Campus, an internationally renowned beacon in the field of cybersecurity and AI, has been a top priority for both the CDU and the SPD in Saarland. However, the Ministry's decision to rename the campus without prior consultation has angered the CDU state parliamentary fraction.
Tobias Hans, the digital and innovation policy spokesman for the CDU, emphasized that cybersecurity and AI have always been a top priority for both parties in Saarland. He is particularly critical of CISPA director Professor Michael Backes considering a private-sector alternative due to the lengthy bureaucratic procedure in the Ministry of Economy.
Ute Mücklich-Heinrich, chairwoman of the economic working group of the CDU fraction, has accused Minister Barke of initiating a ministerial council draft for the renaming of the CISPA Innovation Campus without prior consultation with the CISPA Helmholtz Center. She finds it at least extremely embarrassing for the state government that Professor Backes is apparently forced to consider a private-sector alternative.
Mücklich-Heinrich also states that this approach has put a unique constellation for structural change in their country in great danger. She believes that the political will assumed in the state chancellery is not reaching the specialist departments of the Ministry of Economy.
The CDU has addressed a clear demand to Minister President Anke Rehlinger to call back her Minister of Economy to limit further damage. Mücklich-Heinrich remains hopeful for a clear commitment of CISPA to the region and expresses hope that Professor Backes will continue to commit to the region.
Ministerpräsidentin Anke Rehlinger has yet to publicly comment on the proposed Umbenennung des CISPA Innovation Campus durch das Saarland-Wirtschaftsministerium. The CDU believes the state chancellery was deceived by Minister Barke about the draft agreement, and they continue to emphasize cybersecurity and AI as top priorities for both CDU and SPD in Saarland.
