"Questioning the Purpose: Israeli Official Criticizes Gaza Conflict"

Criticism from Netanyahu over the conflict in Gaza

A surprising voice of dissent has emerged in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, with a top official from Benjamin Netanyahu's government openly questioning the purpose of the prolonged war. Moshe Gafni, head of the ultra-Orthodox Degel Hatorah party, expressed his confusion during a parliamentary committee meeting, saying, "I still don't understand what we're fighting for. I don't understand the purpose."

Gafni started the session by discussing the ceasefire efforts between Israel and Iran and expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his mediation attempts. He then turned his attention to the recent deaths of seven Israeli soldiers in Gaza.

"What are we supposed to do there if soldiers are being killed all the time?" Gafni pondered, showing his frustration with the ongoing conflict. He went on to express a longing for a decisive, pragmatic leader like Trump, stating, "We needed someone like Trump who would say, 'We're bringing the hostages home and returning to ...’”

The Gaza war began due to attacks by Hamas and other extremist groups on Israel in October 2023. Over 1,200 people were killed, more than 250 of whom were taken hostage, and around 56,000 people have been reported dead so far due to the conflict[1]. The Hamas-controlled health authority reports that more than 800 Israeli soldiers have died in the fighting.

Gafni's criticism has found support among groups affected by the conflict, such as the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which has endorsed his call for urgent action to resolve the hostage situation and end the violence[2].

In essence, Moshe Gafni has voiced strong concerns about the ongoing war in Gaza, questioning its purpose in the face of continuous Israeli casualties. He advocates for a leader who will prioritize pragmatic hostage recovery and ceasefire initiatives to end the conflict instead of prolonging military action.
