Hopping to Canaries and Making Phones Dance: Cristina Valido's Music Soirees

In the whirlwind of airports, airplanes, and political conferences, Cristina Valido, Coalición Canaria's representative in the Congress, finds solace and motivation in the rhythmic pulse of her favorite tunes. She openheartedly confesses, "Music is an integral part of my life, it helps me live, and it nourishes me." With these words, she embarks us on a musical journey that echoes her life's highs and lows.

Her first brush with live music was the "extraordinary" band Kool and the Gang. Ever since, a medley of songs from various artists has taken over her headphones, creating a mosaic of tunes from the 80s and 90s. "Lately, I've been having a musical rebirth. I've been absorbing a lot of music from those decades: Radio Futura, Santiago Auserón, El Último de la Fila, M-Clan, Andrés Calamaro... These songs remind me of a very joyful period in my life and of countless concerts," she recalls, seated in a congressional hallway.

With an ear for almost any tune, she gets her groove on when she's happy, dancing to various genres, ranging from rock to salsa or Spanish music. When she's feeling somber, her playlist transforms, filled with songs that accompany her through her melancholic moments.

Cristina Valido began her political career in 1999 as a councilor for the La Orotava City Council, progressing to a counselor of the Tenerife Cabildo and deputy until last year in the Canary Islands Parliament. With the new legislature's inception in the summer of 2023, Cristina Valido has moved to Madrid, being the sole representative of her party in the Congress of Deputies.

At work, while preparing arguments for debates, Cristina craves silence amidst the "cacophony" of the Congress, seeking refuge in the company of her music. The silhouette of a movie soundtrack based on her life in Madrid is clear: she would like to be remembered as someone who worked hard for her land. If a song encapsulating her political career were to be associated with her, she'd choose Patria Canaria, by Braulio.

To celebrate a significant political achievement for the Canary Islands, Cristina would opt for a song that carries deep emotional resonance for the Canarians, such as Himno A La Lucha Canaria, by Los Sabandeños. Its revolutionary anthem-like lyrics ring with a powerful call to action, inspiring generations of Canarians: "Canario, fight, just as the Guanches fought. Fight, Canario, from the sea to the peak."

A Memorable Soundtrack: Positivity and Danceability Reign

Cristina Valido's musical taste leans positively, with her preferred songs averaging a 6.6 in positivity, according to Spotify data. Escuela de Calor by Radio Futura is her most favorable song, scoring a staggering 9.6 in positivity. Her playlist is also characterized by its energetic and danceable tracks, with Dancing In the Dark by Bruce Springsteen delivering a 9.4 for energy, and Celebration by Kool & The Gang scoring 8.9 for danceability.

Genre-Hopping Dynamo

Crossing boundaries and genres, Cristina Valido's musical preferences shift between singer-songwriters like Ana Belén and Ismael Serrano, and the upbeat pop of M-Clan and Nena Daconte. Her taste in music straddles popular music by Los Sabandeños and the indie stylings of Mestisay and Taburiente.

Bonding Music and Politics

The data on songs, genres, artists, and groups have been drawn from the Spotify API, processed using the 'spotifyr' library in R Studio. The original metrics, ranging from 0 to 1, have been expressed as values from 0 to 10 for a better understanding. The chosen metrics include danceability, energy, and positivity of songs. In interviews, only the group or artist is often mentioned, so the most-listened song on Spotify or another one for editorial purposes was included. When a track appears in multiple albums, the oldest or remastered version was considered.

Regarding genres, Spotify's database is highly detailed; for example, "alternative rock" is classified under "rock." However, some artists lack information, preventing them from being categorized.
