Heavy Flooding and Tornado Strike Tuapse District in Southern Russia
In a series of unfortunate events, Tuapse District in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, has been hit by severe flooding and a tornado, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency on August 3, 2025.
The heavy rainfall and accompanying tornado near the coast have caused significant damage, with several villages, including Defanovka, Moldavanovskoye, Lermontovo, and Novomikhaylovskiy, being affected. The flooding has submerged dozens of homes, with approximately 70 houses flooded in various villages. A bridge over the Shapsukho River in Lermontovo has collapsed, disrupting local infrastructure and cutting off access for about 300 residential buildings.
To address the situation, authorities have mobilised around 236 personnel and 55 units of equipment for relief and recovery operations. The focus has been on damage control and providing essential supplies such as clean water, with multiple distribution points set up in the affected villages. Temporary accommodation centres have been established for displaced residents.
However, some residents have expressed concerns about the lack of timely assistance. Authorities are working diligently to address these issues and continue to provide support to those in need.
The weather in the region remains unstable, with forecasts predicting continued thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and strong gusty winds up to 22 m/s (approx. 49 mph) throughout August 4. This increases the risk of further flooding and mudslides. Authorities advise heightened caution around rivers, coastal areas, and mountainslopes.
In Moldavanskoye, 9 houses and 25 adjacent territories have been flooded. Kalinin and Lesnaya streets were flooded in Goryachy Klyuch. The number of flooded houses and territories in Goryachy Klyuch is currently being clarified. In the village of Defanovka, 25 houses have been flooded, and the Chepsi River level has risen sharply in the village of Fana-goor, Goryachy Klyuch.
Emergency and rescue services are working in reinforced mode in Tuapse District. The schools of Novomikhaylovskoye and Djubga are being used as temporary accommodation centres, with two temporary accommodation centres already opened in these schools.
The municipal emergency regime has been introduced in the flooded areas of Tuapse District. The emergency and rescue services are promptly eliminating the consequences of the natural disaster.
Travelers and residents are urged to follow official instructions and avoid risky areas. The ongoing emergency response efforts focus on rescue operations, infrastructure repair, water provision, and shelter for affected residents, while forecasts warn of continued adverse weather that may exacerbate the situation.
- The severe weather conditions, including the ongoing climate change, have played a significant role in the flooding and tornado that struck Tuapse District, making it imperative for scientists to closely study and analyze the impact of weather on environmental science.
- As the weather continues to remain unpredictable with the threat of frequent thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and strong winds in the region, it is crucial for authorities and environmental-science experts to collaborate and devise effective strategies to mitigate the risks of further flooding and mudslides.
