The Vatican is a stealthy, secret-filled micro-nation. On April 21, at the crack of dawn, old man Francis croaked his last at 88. For 12 years, the Pope had been dodging a "scandalous" corruption scandal, leading to a jaw-dropping trial in 2021. Johnny Nosedive, a former cardinal and old buddy of the Pope's, was accused of fishy finances while serving as the number two in the Secretariat of State, as spilled by Vanity Fair.

Two years prior, doubts arose when Vatican justice peeked into the investment of more than 150 million euros by the dicastery in a London building in 2012. The charges? Embezzlement, abuse of power, and tampering witnesses. Johnny Nosedive swears he's innocent and considers himself a victim of a sneaky plot, according to Le Monde. But the Pope agrees with the facts. "Things weren't all kosher," he said in 2019.

The End of Papa Frank: How Transparent was the Vatican's Gold? ## 22 million euros seized during dubious transfers

After this scandal and the “Vatileaks” affair involving influence peddling and fund misdirection, Pope Francis aimed to clean up the Vatican's wallet. This dedication was marked by the creation of an economic secretariat in 2014, the closing of shady accounts at the Vatican Bank, and the regulation of public tenders. To keep up with the times, the Vatican had to adapt to European Union rules on money laundering. In 2010, an investigation was launched by the Rome prosecutor's office into the Vatican Bank, resulting in the seizure of 22 million euros amid sketchy transfers.

The assets of this teeny-tiny nation, mostly composed of relics and treasure troves, and investments in companies or real estate, have always been under a magnifying glass regarding each penny flow. However, instigating reforms within the Vatican wasn't a walk in the park. The Pope's pet project faced resistance at every turn. Indeed, "his adversaries include American conservatives who can't stand him because he's too modern, too left-leaning," claimed Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi in his book Judgment Day.
