The Democratic Alliance (DA), a significant partner of Cyril Ramaphosa's party in South Africa's governing coalition, issues warnings of severe repercussions if their conditions are not satisfied. Earlier, Ramaphosa dismissed a DA deputy minister.

Crisis Arises Following Ramaphosa's Dismissal of Government Asset

The South African government's coalition, already on shaky ground, is crumbling under the weight of allegations of corruption and dysfunction. The Democratic Alliance (DA), the second biggest party, has pulled out of President Cyril Ramaphosa's National Dialogue on Saturday in a show of displeasure.

DA leader John Steenhuisen called Ramaphosa out for playing a double game, setting an unreasonable 48-hour time limit for the president to purge his government of alleged corrupt ANC ministers and deputy ministers. When the deadline passed without action, Steenhuisen slammed the president for showing "disrespect, arrogance, and double standards."

The DA accuses Ramaphosa of running a sham bureaucracy, as his promises of clean governance ring hollow in the face of systemic corruption within his own ranks. Steenhuisen warned that the DA would not waste its breath in endless talks with the ANC as long as Ramaphosa fails to take decisive action against corruption.

It appears that Ramaphosa called off a trip to a UN conference in Spain due to concerns that the DA might cave in and choose to leave the coalition. However, Steenhuisen confirmed that the DA remains in government, for now, and has decided not to move for a motion of no confidence against the president.

The coalition was formed over a year ago, following the ANC's first-ever loss of parliamentary majority since Nelson Mandela led them to power in 1994. The ANC and DA have been at loggerheads ever since, clashing over the budget, policies on racial inequality, and more. Their differences now threaten to derail the National Dialogue initiative, intended to tackle major issues like high unemployment and crime.

The ongoing struggle between these ideological adversaries adds another chapter to the tumultuous history of South Africa's coalition government, casting doubt on its ability to navigate the country's complex political landscape.

  1. The South African government's policy-and-legislation faced a significant challenge as the ongoing war-and-conflicts within its coalition, specifically between the ANC and the DA, threatens to derail vital initiatives like the National Dialogue.
  2. The general-news of South Africa was dominated by political discord and allegations of corruption, as John Steenhuisen, DA leader, accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of playing double games and running a sham bureaucracy.
  3. Dark clouds hang over the future of Africa, as the government's inability to address crime-and-justice issues, such as systemic corruption, in their ranks undermines public trust and fosters dissent, exemplified by the DA's decision to pull out of Ramaphosa's National Dialogue.
  4. Despite ongoing tension and a strained relationship with the ANC, the DA has decided not to invoke the general-news-worthy motion of no confidence against President Ramaphosa, keeping the government coalition intact—at least for now.
