Criminal shooting incident in Austin claims the lives of a 4-year-old girl, her grandfather, and a Target employee. The police reported the shooting as unprovoked.
In a shocking incident that took place outside a Target store in Austin, Texas, a 32-year-old man, Ethan Nieneker, is accused of a random and violent attack that claimed the lives of three innocent people, including a 4-year-old girl, and left another person injured.
Nieneker, who claimed to be Jesus during the shooting without providing a motive, was later subdued by officers using a Taser and taken into custody. The victims of the attack have been identified as Rosa Machuca-Osorio, a Target employee, Adam Chow, his 4-year-old granddaughter, and another adult.
Nieneker's criminal history with the Austin Police Department includes prior encounters involving assault, driving while intoxicated, and mental health reports. His gun, it appears, was acquired through family, with indications of "serious issues" and "failures" in managing those mental health challenges.
The attack, according to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, was unprovoked and deliberate. Nieneker is said to have first shot at the Target employee, Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, before approaching a family's car and fatally shooting the little girl and her grandfather, while the grandfather's wife was minorly wounded.
After the shooting, Nieneker embarked on a chaotic escape, involving multiple carjackings and crashes. He allegedly assaulted another female driver, stole her Volkswagen, tried to break into a Waymo vehicle, and vandalized the home of an acquaintance from bible study.
Nieneker now faces multiple charges including two counts of capital murder, one count of first-degree felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, aggravated robbery, and attempted murder. Despite his extensive criminal and mental health history, law enforcement has not publicly disclosed a clear motive for this tragic incident.
A Target spokesperson expressed condolences and offered support to the affected parties, while Adam Chow was remembered as the "heart and steady backbone of the family," and the little girl was described as "pure silliness and joy." The Austin-Travis County EMS initially reported four victims, but the number was later corrected.
