Crime rates experiencing significant drop-off, with murder incidents reaching a 5-year low, as highlighted in Tuesday's morning recap.
Mexico has witnessed a 15.9% decrease in the homicide rate during the first seven months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This significant improvement is largely attributed to the implementation of a new national security strategy under President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration.
The average number of homicides per day dropped from 82.9 in early 2024 to 69.7 in early 2025. In July 2025 specifically, homicides averaged 64.9 per day, which is 25.3% lower than September 2024.
The new strategy has focused on dismantling organized crime networks, which are responsible for about two-thirds of all homicides in Mexico. Enhancements in policing and national security coordination have led to increased arrests of criminals and suspects linked to violent crime.
Larger operations have also resulted in the seizure of firearms and narcotics, which reduces the means of violence. Strategic deployments in high-crime states such as Guanajuato, where homicides fell by 60.7% from February to July 2025, are key components of this approach.
The national security strategy also emphasizes intelligence-led policing to disrupt organized crime activities more efficiently. While socioeconomic improvements may indirectly support crime reduction, the immediate homicide decrease is primarily linked to enhanced security measures and law enforcement practices implemented in 2025 under this new national security approach.
Marcela Figueroa Franco, the head of the National Public Security System, presented the homicide data at a press conference, highlighting the success of the strategy and emphasizing the need for continued work. The decline in homicides is a testament to the concerted efforts by the government to reinforce public security, including improved policing strategies, arrests, and interdiction of arms and drugs fueling violence.
