Cricketer Stuart Broad attributes Yashasvi Jaiswal's early departure as the key reason for India's slump at Lord's.
In the third Test between India and England at Lord's, former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has expressed his disappointment with Yashasvi Jaiswal's shot selection, which he believes played a significant role in shifting momentum in England's favour.
Jaiswal was dismissed after scoring just 13 runs, and Broad criticized his approach, stating it was a "really bad shot" that allowed England to gain momentum. The early dismissal of Jaiswal put India's score at 5 for 1, putting pressure on the rest of the batting lineup.
Broad noted that Jaiswal, being a player who can move the scoreboard forward, should have considered cutting the ball over the offside instead of attempting a pull, which led to his dismissal. This wicket was crucial as it allowed England to be more aggressive with their field placements and create pressure on India once Karun Nair came in to bat, a player known for playing each ball on merit.
Despite Ravindra Jadeja's unbeaten 61, India were bowled out for 170 on Day 5, losing the match by 22 runs. Shubman Gill and Akash Deep were dismissed cheaply after Karun Nair's dismissal, leaving India at 58 for 4 at stumps on Day 4. On Day 5, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, and KL Rahul were dismissed in quick succession.
Broad emphasized the importance of having an aggressive opener in low chases, citing examples like Sehwag and Warner. In a low chase, according to Broad, if the opening batters can take the game away quickly, it becomes difficult for the defending team. If the opening batters score 60 for none or one off ten, the game is essentially over, Broad suggested.
England now lead the five-match series 2-1 with two Tests remaining. The next Test is scheduled to begin on July 1st at Trent Bridge.
Stuart Broad, referring to Yashasvi Jaiswal's shot selection during the India vs England Test, emphasized the significance of considering alternative strokes such as a cut over the offside instead of the risky pull that resulted in his dismissal. Additionally, Broad highlighted the importance of having an aggressive opener, such as Sehwag or Warner, in low-chase situations, suggesting their quick scoring can render the chase virtually impossible for the defending team.
