Sayonara, Big Show! Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODI Cricket, Sets Sights on T20 World Cup
Aussie cricketing legend Glenn Maxwell, famously known as "Big Show" for his electrifying style of play, announced his retirement from one-day internationals (ODIs) yet remains committed to Twenty20 (T20) cricket and the upcoming World Cup. At 36, Maxwell played 149 ODIs, racking up an impressive 3,990 runs with a second-highest strike rate of 126.70, just behind West Indian heavyweight Andre Russell.
Citing physical wear and tear, Maxwell admitted feeling less than his best during games recently. In a chat with George Bailey, the chair of selectors, the veteran cricketer decided to step back from ODIs, allowing other talented players to seize the opportunity and take charge.
Maxwell's decision came after his last game, Australia's Champions Trophy semifinal defeat to India in March, and followed fellow veteran Steve Smith's exit from the 50-over format.
Maxwell's memorable career featured standout moments, including a remarkable 201-run knock at the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai. In a high-stress situation and battling the heat, Maxwell took command, shattering 179 runs from 128 deliveries to secure his team's victory. His unbroken 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins led Australia to a stunning win over favourites India in the final at Ahmedabad and their eventual tournament triumph.
Bailey acknowledged Maxwell's indelible contribution to the one-day game, praising his remarkable natural talent, skill, energy, and passion for playing for Australia. Although Maxwell moves on from ODIs, Bailey expressed that he'll be central to the T20 squad's progress as they gear up for the World Cup next year.
Glenn Maxwell's fabulous ODI career boasted many acclaimed moments, highlighted by a striking strike rate, four centuries, and 23 half-centuries. His off-spin bowling also garnered 77 wickets during his tenure.
As Maxwell prepares for his T20 future, fans eagerly anticipate the irreplaceable energy he'll bring to the game.
