Cricket community acclaims Gill's impressive performance in Birmingham

In a thrilling turn of events during the second Test against England in Birmingham, Shubman Gill scored an unforgettable 269 runs, guiding India to a formidable total of 587 runs. This impressive performance not only took India to a position of power but also etched Gill's name in the annals of Indian cricket.

Gill's double century was met with widespread acclaim. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer lauded the knock, describing it as the "highest Test score by an Indian captain." Virender Sehwag, another Indian cricket legend, took to Instagram to praise Gill's knock, calling it an inning of "great patience, maturity, and skill."

Shubman Gill's historic achievement makes him only the sixth Indian captain to score a 250-plus score in Tests, joining the elite company of Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Karun Nair, and Virat Kohli. Interestingly, Gill's double century is the first by an Indian captain in England, surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin's 179 at Old Trafford in 1990.

Gill's performance was not just a personal milestone but a strong message for the English team. Shikhar Dhawan hailed Gill's knock on Twitter, stating it was "not just a milestone, but a strong message."

In addition to his achievement in England, Gill also joined the exclusive club of Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma to be the fourth Indian with a century in Tests and ODIs both. Gill's double ton is also a testament to his versatility as a captain, as he became the first Asian captain to score a double century in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA).

At just 25 years and 298 days, Gill is the second-youngest Indian captain to score a Test double ton. He surpassed Kohli's 254* against South Africa in 2019 to have the highest score ever by an Indian captain. Gill's double ton is also the second instance of a double ton by an Indian skipper overseas in the last 15 years, nine years after Virat Kohli's 200 against West Indies back in 2016 at North Sound.

Gill took only three innings as a captain to reach his double ton, a feat he shares with Sunil Gavaskar. He joined Rahul Dravid (217 at The Oval in 2002) and Sunil Gavaskar (221 at The Oval in 1979) to become the third player to score a double ton for India in England in Tests.

As the cricket fraternity continues to celebrate Gill's historic achievement, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami extended their kudos to the young Indian captain on their Instagram. Gill's double ton is not just a personal victory but a significant boost for Indian cricket as they strive to maintain their dominance against England.

The cricket fraternity has been united in praising Shubman Gill's double century, with Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami expressing their kudos on Instagram.
