Catastrophe Practice Run: Chaotic Stadium Disaster Simulation
Has the stadium's roof caved in? Emergency responders preparing for potential disaster scenarios. - Crews engage in a simulation of a critical situation.
Get ready for a gripping test run in Potsdam! On July 5th, emergency services and medical teams are kicking off a massive simulation of a horrific stadium mishap — the roof giving way. Ralf Krawinkel, the head honcho of the Potsdam Fire Department, confirmed the event, explaining that around 170 rescuers, 50 vehicles, and a helicopter will participate. To make things even more realistic, 150 folks will volunteer to play injured stadium patrons.
Feed 'em dirt and blood
You read that right; the injured volunteers will be made up to look like they've just been through the wringer. According to Krawinkel, the scene will be tense, the characters emotionally distressed, and everyone's running around trying to help or find their loved ones. The fire department aims to simulate a real-life situation as closely as possible, with the added challenge of saving those trapped under the rubble.
No script, just improvisation
"This ain't no play," Krawinkel said, stressing that emergency services won't have a heads-up about the circumstances. Their goal is to efficiently coordinate in a real-world crisis and fine-tune their response procedures from arrival to hospital transportation. "Let's face it," he admitted, "things won't always go according to plan, but the key is to learn from it."
Together, they'll stand and conquer
"In cases like these, rescue squads, doctors, and medical staff have to work like a well-oiled machine," said Antje Pfaffe, head of the Central Emergency Room at Potsdam's St. Josefs Hospital. In a pinch like this, they should function as a united front. In the hospital, they'll prioritize treatment based on the severity of injuries and deal with capacity restrictions.
Traffic chaos on the horizon
Krawinkel also warned that traffic in the stadium area will be disrupted on the big day. He estimated the cost of the drill to be around 20,000 euros. The last time a drill like this took place was back in 2012.

In the heart of Potsdam, emergency services are conducting a disaster simulation, replicating a partial stadium collapse, aimed at enhancing their rescue operations in real-life situations. The event, happening on July 5th, will also involve European leagues and sports enthusiasts, with football being a part of the scenario. Vocational training will be provided to volunteers playing injured patrons to ensure maximum shock value, leading to a more realistic drill.
