Creatures Prepare for a Series of Trump's Fresh Tariff Scares

Seahorses apparently out of reach due to Trump's recent global import tax scheme; no corner of the world escaped his grasping ambition, not even the frozen wasteland of Heard Island, a distant, uninhabited, 7-day journey from Perth's coast.

Mack Hughes '25, a student at Holy Cross, has been making waves both on and off campus. While he recently celebrated the return of the crispy buffalo chicken sandwich at the dining hall, he's also been busy penning articles - one about his love for Buffalo Chicken Dip on Valentine's Day, and another highlighting an abundant and successful eggplant harvest.

However, Mack's love for food isn't the only thing generating headlines. Last week, news broke about a global import tax scheme launched by President Trump, affecting even remote locations like Heard Island, home to 100,000 penguins and various seal and sea bird species.

Contrary to some reports, there is no evidence that animals were directly affected by these tariffs. The import taxes primarily targeted goods from various countries, such as Laos, Switzerland, South Africa, Taiwan, and the EU, with varying tariff rates on goods. There's been no mention of impacts on animals or animal trade.

But the tariffs did seem to extend to some unexpected entities. The reason for the hammerhead shark tariffs remains unclear, but President Trump has been disturbed by their name plagiarizing a tool they barely resemble. Similarly, it appears Trump's tariffs are aimed at beloved animated characters, potentially including Kowalski, Melman, and Bruce from Madagascar.

Interestingly, giraffes in Africa's Falkland Islands and hammerhead sharks of the Norwegian archipelago, Svalbard, were also targeted. However, the giraffe tariff was revoked after it was discovered that giraffes do not have thumbs.

Professor Bob Right, an expert in Animalology, expressed his surprise at Heard Island's trade relationship with the U.S., stating it's hard to imagine. The penguins of Heard Island are now grappling with the effects of these tariffs, adding another layer of intrigue to this unfolding story.

Despite the global turmoil, Mack Hughes '25 remains excited about the return of his favourite sandwich and continues to share his culinary adventures through his writing. Whether it's an ode to Buffalo Chicken Dip or a celebration of an eggplant feast, Mack's love for food shines through in all his work.
