Title swap: "Creatures from the Chaotic Capital"

"Creatures from the Chaotic Capital" is a wild Korean drama that merges monsters, sci-fi, and romance. The title mirrors the early name of today's Seoul in the spring of 1945, when Korea still fell under Japanese colonial rule. As the war situation worsened, Japanese scientists conducted bizarre experiments on human bodies at the Anjo Hospital, hoping to create a balance that resulted in devastating losses for the inmates. A scientist uttered, "Leave no traces of what we did here," acknowledging the heinous crimes they had committed.

Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon, known for his chilling presence in Parasite) is a wealthy pawnshop owner who thrives in the political turmoil of wartime, while Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee), a missing persons investigator, searches relentlessly with her father (Jo Han-chul) for her missing mother, following clues to Gyeongseong. Their paths cross at the hospital, where most of the action unfolds, creating an unsettling sense of claustrophobia reminiscent of "Alien." Miraculously, the narrative weaves in and out of this setting, using flashbacks to flesh out characters and creating a rhythm that never feels drawn out, despite the hour-long episodes.

Meanwhile, Jang transforms into a typical power-hungry gangster inspired by Yoon. The series' science fiction elements have a hint of "Overlord," a 2018 film about Nazis during war, performing gruesome experiments. However, what truly sets "Creatures from the Chaotic Capital" apart is the way co-writer Kang Eun-kyeong and director Jung Dong-yoon weave cleverly subtle, thrilling moments into seemingly insignificant characters, making them all the more dangerous as they navigate the hospital corridors.

Netflix's decision to release the series in two parts over successive weeks is reminiscent of some of its more popular productions such as Stranger Things and The Crown. After viewing six episodes, it remains to be seen if the series can maintain its balance of absurdity and thrill as it reaches its climax. If it mirrors the madness of the original scientist experiments at the Anjo Hospital, then this operation can be considered a triumphant success.

Creatures premieres on Netflix on December 22nd.
