The 2025 Indy 500 was nothing short of thrilling, despite a delayed start due to rain. When the race kicked off, chaos ensued before the green flag waved. Scott McLaughlin spun out in Turn 1, losing control due to cold track temperatures and tires. Marco Andretti failed to navigate Turn 1 after alleged contact from other racers.
Robert Shwartzman, the polesitter, quickly dropped to second and third place, with Pato O'Ward and Takuma Sato hot on their heels. The race entered a brief yellow-flag period due to a rain sprinkle, but the action resumed swiftly. Scott Dixon had to pit to fix a brake caliper issue, whereas Alexander Rossi encountered a fire in his pit that resulted in him being forced out of the race. Emergency crews worked quickly to treat and extinguish the fire, but Rossi's sad day wasn't over yet.
The race continued to bring drama, with numerous crashes during pit stops—including polesitter Shwartzman. Racing remained intense, with yellows causing more yellows through lap 100. Josef Newgarden's troubles forced him to retire on lap 142.
With 40 laps remaining, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Conor Daly, and David Malukas led the pack in their Chevies. However, Alex Palou was lurking in fourth place, ready to pounce. When it came time for pit stops, Palou's crew pulled off an incredible move, catapulting him to the top of the pack with superior precision. Hunter-Reay stalled during his stop, eliminating him from contention.
In the final 25 laps, the race heated up between Palou and O'Ward, with Ericsson nipping at their heels. With 13 laps left, Palou took the lead from Ericsson, securing his first-career oval victory in an epic conclusion to the race.
