Dallas Cowboys Announce Joe Milton III as Starting Quarterback for Preseason Game Against Baltimore Ravens

The Dallas Cowboys have announced that Joe Milton III will be the starting quarterback for their upcoming preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed this decision, putting an end to the speculation about Will Grier's potential starting role.

Milton, a 25-year-old sixth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2024, was acquired by the Cowboys in April. The team traded a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Patriots for Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick (No. 217).

Milton made his debut with the Cowboys in the preseason opener against the Ravens last week, playing 59 snaps. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Despite being shaken up during the game, the coaching staff is eager to see more from Milton in Week 2.

Grier is expected to receive some playing time as well, but Milton will be the main starter for this preseason matchup. The Cowboys are currently trialing options to replace longtime No. 2 quarterback Cooper Rush, who signed with the Ravens in free agency.

The Cowboys are also facing uncertainty with their running game, as they need more time to determine whether rookie running back Jaydon Blue and free agent addition Miles Sanders will be able to play against the Ravens. Dallas expects rookie first-round pick Tyler Booker to play after missing last week's game.

Milton is praised for his arm strength and size (6-foot-5, 245 pounds). In the only game he played with the Patriots, he completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards with a touchdown and ran for a score. The Cowboys will be hoping that Milton can build on this performance and establish himself as the primary backup to Dak Prescott this season.

Jerry Jones, the Cowboys' owner, did not rule out adding a veteran quarterback or any other player as roster cuts are made over the next two weeks. This indicates that the Cowboys are keeping their options open and are willing to make moves to improve their team before the start of the regular season.
