In a shocking turn of events, the Arabic street sign on Ellerstraße in Düsseldorf was defaced over the weekend, with a knight figure and the words "Remigration instead of submission" displayed prominently. The city's leaders have united in condemning this xenophobic act, which took place during the ongoing International Weeks against Racism.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller of Düsseldorf (CDU) stated that open xenophobia has no place in the city, and that the racist disfigurement was removed, and a complaint filed. Councilmen Samy Charchira, Alliance 90/The Greens, and Hakim El Ghazali, SPD, appealed to the city society, Mayor Keller, the police, and city authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. They also called for the immediate removal of the racist sign shields.

The Düsseldorf Appeal, a collective of city leaders, emphasised that the alleged defacement of the bilingual street signs by an extreme-right group is hostile and unacceptable. They further stated that the perpetrators do not represent the spirit of the city and have nothing in common with the Rhineland. The state protection department has taken up the investigation into the racist disfigurement of the sign on Ellerstraße.

The figure glorified by the perpetrators, Karl Martell, was a Frankish mayor of the palace who won the Battle of Poitiers against Arabs and Berbers in 732. However, recent research has exposed the 19th-century legend of Karl Martell as false. The AfD (Alternative for Germany) party celebrated the action, stating "Back then the lance, today the deportation flight!".

The FDP Düsseldorf faction leader, Manfred Neuenhaus, explained that the city immediately filed a complaint and is committed to confronting such incidents and punishing any form of racism. The Düsseldorf Appeal addressed racists, stating that Düsseldorf is an open and diverse city that welcomes diversity and hospitality. Monica Brauer, a local resident, shared photos on Facebook against the Nazi action on Ellerstraße.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and tolerance in our society. The city of Düsseldorf and its leaders stand firm in their commitment to upholding these values and promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment for all its residents.

In light of the defacement, Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller of Düsseldorf (CDU) is calling for the perpetrators responsible for the racist disfigurement of the street sign on Ellerstraße to be brought to justice. Additionally, the Düsseldorf Appeal, a collective of city leaders, is emphasizing that this alleged defacement by an extreme-right group is hostile and unacceptable, advocateing for a city that welcomes diversity and hospitality.
