Courtney Dauwalter's Dolomite Domination: A Remarkable Comeback Win
Kicking off where she typically does - at the top - Courtney Dauwalter claimed an impressive win at the 120km Lavaredo Ultra Trail by UTMB in the Dolomites. Despite a recent setback at the Cocodona 250, the Colorado-based ultra runner proved her mettle, crossing the finish line in 14 hours, 14 minutes, and 40 seconds.
Dauwalter held an impressive lead throughout the Italian race, besting Alyssa Clark, Marina Cugnetto, and Karolina Wierzchowiak, with a finish time mere minutes off Rosanna Buchauer's course record. One spectator jokingly commented on an Instagram post from UTMB, "She looks like she ran a 5k."
The title of first place is no stranger to the 40-year-old star, who's renowned for setting course records at the hundred-mile distance in her trusted Salomon S/Lab Genesis shoes. Even so, it's gratifying to see Dauwalter back in form after a disappointing DNF at the Cocodona 250.
Tallying up results, Clark placed second in 14:43:51, with Wierzchowiak rounding out the podium at 16:19:57, after Cugnetto dropped off around the 90k mark.
On the men's side, Ben Dhiman, another US runner, took the win and set a new course record of 11:49:16. Raul Butaci (Romania) followed in second place, and Italy's Andreas Reiterer took third.
Launched in 2007, the Lavaredo Ultra Trail by UTMB takes trail runners across a UNESCO World Heritage Site, gaining over 19,000ft (5,800m) in elevation over 75 miles.
