Court revokes Olympian Sushil Kumar's bail in homicide investigation

The Supreme Court of India has made a significant decision in the Ashok Dhankad v. State NCT of Delhi case, revoking the bail granted to Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar. The case, which has been the subject of previous reports, is related to the murder of another wrestler, Sagar Dhankhad, that took place in 2021.

The Supreme Court's decision was based on several key factors. The court found that the Delhi High Court had overlooked the seriousness of the crime, the potential for Kumar to influence the trial, and his conduct during the investigation, which included evading arrest despite non-bailable warrants being issued against him.

The grievous nature of the crime, involving a violent attack with dangerous weapons that resulted in fatal injuries, was a significant concern. Additionally, there were allegations that Kumar had tried to intimidate witnesses during the investigation and while on interim bail, raising concerns about tampering with evidence and trial fairness.

Furthermore, Kumar's evasion of arrest for several days before being apprehended was seen as a reflection of a lack of cooperation with the legal process. The court also noted the national capital's reputation as a "criminal playground," with serious law violations, including abduction and violent attacks, as alleged in the FIR.

Consequently, the Supreme Court set aside the Delhi High Court’s bail order dated March 4, 2025, and ordered that Kumar surrender to custody within a week to continue his trial. The cancellation of bail underscores the Supreme Court’s emphasis on the severity of the allegations, the risk to the integrity of the trial, and the defendant's conduct undermining the legal process.

It is essential to note that the cancellation of bail does not necessarily mean a conviction in the case. The next court proceedings in this case are yet to be announced. For more details about this decision, readers may refer to a premium article, requiring a subscription to access.
