Court releases former police officer accused of bribery from editor at URA.RU
Leninginsky District Court in Yekaterinburg imposes measures against ex-police officer Andrey Karpow. According to our courtroom correspondent, he has been placed under house arrest until August 4.
The hearing was closed to the press.
Karpow is the uncle of Denis Allayarov, the head editor of URA.RU's Sverdlovsk branch. Allayarov is accused of giving his relative 20,000 rubles, according to URA.RU's statement.
"We believe that Allayarov has become a victim of a set-up by his uncle attempting to lighten his punishment for another charge, and law enforcement made use of it. Denis denies any wrongdoing; he neither admits to nor acknowledges the existence of a bribe," reported URA.RU.
During extensive raids conducted at the office and homes of URA.RU staff members and the accused, no evidence of the alleged bribe was found. URA.RU claims the information is unreliable.
Karpow was dismissed from service for misconduct, and he will never be eligible for public service again, as reported by our source. Two upper-level officials of the former police officer were subjected to strict disciplinary action following an internal investigation, added the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
