Court rejects bail request for "Uncle Phol" in connection to toddler's homicide
Chaiphol Wipha, also known as Lung Phol (Uncle Phol), has remained in custody following the Supreme Court's decision to reject his bail request. The high-profile case has gripped Thailand since Chaiphol was arrested and charged with the murder of three-year-old Nong Chompoo in June 2021.
Initially, public sentiment leaned towards sympathy for Chaiphol, fueled by media portrayal that turned him into a minor celebrity before his conviction. He garnered substantial public support, reportedly receiving huge donations, and even collaborating on entertainment projects. Chaiphol and his wife, the child's aunt who was acquitted, ran a YouTube channel, "Lung Phol-Pa Taen Family" (Uncle Phol and Pa Taen), with over 350,000 followers.
However, the Supreme Court emphasized the seriousness and social impact of the crime in denying bail. The court's decision followed a formal objection from the public prosecutor, who stated that Chaiphol's likelihood of flight increased due to Mukdahan province's proximity to the border, his sound financial status, and the high-profile nature of the case.
The Court of Appeal Region 4 had previously increased Chaiphol's prison sentence to 26 years for the murder of Orrawan Wongsricha. In December 2023, the Mukdahan Provincial Court sentenced Chaiphol to 20 years for recklessness causing death and child abduction. The court also ordered him to pay compensation to the girl's family.
The court argued that releasing Chaiphol Wipha on bail would undermine the justice system and hinder law enforcement, damaging public confidence in the process. As a result of the Supreme Court's decision, Chaiphol will remain in custody pending the outcome of the Supreme Court appeal.
The intense media frenzy surrounding the case kept public attention tightly focused on the lengthy investigation and trial. Two TV channels provided daily reality-show-like updates for months, making the case a major public spectacle. Despite the media attention, the Supreme Court's decision underscores the importance of upholding justice and maintaining public trust in the legal system.
