Court Hearing: Right-wing Activist Marla-Svenja Liebich Faces Judgment Following Demonstration Against a Photographer

Marla-Svenja Liebich, a prominent figure in Leipzig's right-wing extremist scene, has seen her appeal against a conviction for an attack on a photographer during a COVID-19 demonstration dismissed by the Oberlandesgericht Naumburg. The decision, announced on July 5, 2025, marks the conclusion of the appeal process at the appellate court level.

The case, which dates back to a demonstration on Augustusplatz in November 2020, saw an estimated 20,000 people gather in opposition to pandemic measures. The incident in question occurred near the main station on the Ring, where Liebich, along with Caroline K. and Uwe H. (53), were convicted of dangerous bodily harm in September 2023.

According to the indictment, the attack on the photographer, Mirko N., took place amidst a tumultuous situation that saw bottles being thrown, police officers and journalists becoming targets, and some demonstrators managing to break through a chain in the area of the tram tracks on Georgiring. The local court found the self-defense version of the defendants to be untrue.

Mirko N. had previously alleged that he swung his hand at Liebich before the attack, but the investigation against him for attacking Liebich was later discontinued, according to his lawyer's statement. Another person who was supposedly involved in the attack was never identified.

Liebich, who was known as Sven Liebich before officially changing her name and gender entry in 2024, is no stranger to legal troubles. In mid-May 2023, she was sentenced to one year and six months imprisonment in another case. The question of her specific imprisonment will likely be a bigger topic in the near future.

The chamber under presiding judge Berthold Pfuhl could announce its verdict next Friday. Matthias B. (44) is also said to have participated in the tumult at the end of the incident. The injured photographer and his escort testified again as witnesses on Friday.
