Couple Turns Puerto Rico Farm into Sanctuary After Leaving Corporate Life
A couple, after years of planning, left the corporate world to live on a farm in Puerto Rico. They bought a 15-hectare property in Utuado, replacing coffee trees with a variety of fruit trees, palms, and bamboo species. Their journey began in 1997 when they first discussed their escape from the rat race and their future in the mountains.
The author and their husband, raised with conventional expectations, felt a strong connection to Puerto Rico, particularly Utuado. They visited the island twice before settling there. Their decision to leave the biotech industry was not spontaneous but built over years. A sign came when their company announced layoffs, pushing them to quit their jobs and pursue their dream.
They started their new life in 2017, acquiring Mayani Farms. However, Hurricane Maria struck that year, destroying much of their farm. Undeterred, they spent the past eight years rebuilding, turning their property into a sanctuary for goats, chickens, ducks, a pig named Cora, and numerous dogs and cats.
Today, the couple lives on their 15-hectare farm, growing a variety of fruit trees, palms, and bamboo species. They keep livestock and enjoy the company of many pets. Their unconventional life in Utuado, Puerto Rico, is a testament to their shared dream and commitment to living a life that aligns with their values.
