In the vibrant heart of Koh Phangan, a popular tourist destination, a Polishcouple found themselves in a precarious situation.
Embracing their affection in an unexpected manner, the twosome were seen locked in a naked impromptu dance on Ban Tai Road at a rather unusual hour - 4.30pm. Unsurprisingly, local residents were taken aback, reports Pol Col Apichart Chansamret, the Koh Phangan police chief.
Hastily arriving on the scene, the authorities snapped some evidence and requested the 27-year-old man and the 24-year-old woman to dress up before apprehending them.
As per Pol Col Apichart, the couple stated that they had shed their clothes to express their love for each other openly. However, the cops edified them about Thailand's stance on public nudity, reminding them that such acts are seen as a crime punishable by a hefty fine of up to 5,000 baht.
Drug tests on the duo turned out to be negative, and the woman fessed up, paying the fine and being promptly released. But,her partner grew restless and was sent for a mental examination at Koh Phangan Hospital. Additionally, immigration authorities were alerted to revoke their visas.
In a statement, Surat Thani deputy governor Theeroot Supawibulpol explained that nude sunbathing on Koh Phangan's beaches is a recurring occurrence. He added that local officials had been known to arrest and fine offenders.
Apparently, there exists a history of semi-tolerance for nudity in certain areas around Mae Haad, Bovy Beach, Pirate Beach, and a portion of Leela Beach in Haad Rin. However, it's crucial to approach these zones with caution, adhering to local norms and maintaining discretion.
In essence, while some informal spaces on Koh Phangan might unofficially tolerate nudity, public nudity commits one against local laws and customs. Engaging in such acts can lead to legal repercussions for foreigners, including arrest, fines, and even the revocation of visas.
