County-wide voting for the position of County Councillor takes place in Herford County during the 2025 local elections

In the district of Herford, residents will head to the polls once more on September 28 for a runoff election to decide the position of District Administrator (Landrat). The contest will be between Mirco Schmidt (CDU) and Frank Diembeck (SPD / Alliance 90/The Greens).

The initial election held on September 14 saw a voter turnout of 57.39 percent, with Schmidt receiving 43.59 percent of the votes (47,446 votes) and Diembeck securing 40.58 percent (44,162 votes). Neither candidate managed to surpass the 50 percent mark, necessitating a runoff election.

For those who did not indicate a preference for postal voting in the runoff election, the opportunity to apply for it will be available from September 15. Postal voting in person will be available in cities and municipalities from September 18. Polling stations will open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. on election day. Voters will cast their ballots at the same polling station where they voted on September 14.

It is important to note that no new voter notifications will be sent out for the runoff election. Voters will need to present their voter notification or a valid form of personal ID. Ballot papers for the runoff election can only be printed after the election result has been determined by the district election committee.

In the district council election, the CDU and SPD emerged as the strongest factions, each securing 15 seats. The AfD, The Left, FDP, UWG-Kreis, The PARTY, and Volt have received their respective seats as follows: AfD - 9 seats, The Left - 3 seats, FDP - 2 seats, UWG-Kreis - 1 seat, The PARTY - 1 seat, Volt - 0 seats. The Greens secured 8.98 percent of the votes (10,108 votes) and have 4 seats.

The runoff election between Schmidt and Diembeck is a significant event for the district of Herford, and all eligible voters are encouraged to exercise their right to vote on September 28.
